The Island of Perdido Key

Our area is one of the few remaining areas of protected wilderness in the Florida Panhandle. The island is only a few hundred yards wide in most places and 60% of the 16-mile long stretch of beach in Perdido Key is state and federal parks providing an abundance of undeveloped areas to explore.

Sea Turtle

Sea Turtle Hatchlings

The sea turtle is another endangered visitor to Perdido Key. They arrive between May and September to lay eggs and about two months later, if the nest has survived, the hatchlings emerge and follow the brightest light in the sky, usually the moon, which leads them by instinct to the sea. Less than 1% will survive their first year. The ones that do, return to Perdido Key to begin the cycle over. Please do your part to help them to survive by doing the following.

Remove your items from the beach at the end of each day

Use a red filter on your flashlight when ghost-crabbing

Fill in any holes in the sand at day’s end

Do not disturb nesting females, nests, or hatchlings

Turn out beachfront lights after dusk

Close blinds or curtains in beachfront homes
